Stop hitting blindly into a net. A 72″ x 72″ grid divides the cage into labeled zones for ground balls, line drives, and fly balls — so every swing has a visual result, not just a feeling.

The TAP® Hitting Target is a large, 72″ x 72″ hitting backdrop that hangs in the cage and divides ball flight into clearly marked zones for ground balls, line drives, and fly balls. Launch angle — the vertical angle at which the ball leaves the bat after contact — is made visible on the banner so every swing comes with instant feedback on whether the barrel (the sweet-spot hitting zone of the bat) sent the ball into a useful launch range.

  • Segmented Launch-Angle Grid Instead of a Blank Net — Printed rows and columns correspond to ground balls, line-drive-height contact, and fly balls. The strike point on the grid makes the result obvious on every rep — no guessing required.
  • L/C/R Layout for Directional Awareness and Spray Patterns — Left, center, and right columns let hitters aim for specific lanes. Spray — meaning how batted balls distribute across left, center, and right field — is trainable even in an indoor tunnel.
  • High-Contrast Rays and Color-Coded Zones — Bold yellow and green rays flare from the central region, visually framing different field directions and exit paths for a clear launch-window reference on every swing.
  • Transforms Tee and Soft-Toss into Target Practice — Standard drills become focused accuracy sessions where each swing has a defined job: hit a certain box, band, or lane.
  • Pairs Naturally with Radar for Exit-Velocity Training — Add a Pocket Radar or similar device and athletes record exit velocity — the speed of the ball off the bat in miles per hour — while seeing exactly where it struck the grid. Hard contact is only rewarded when it also travels into a productive lane.
  • Durable Vinyl with 12 Ball Bungees — Heavy-duty vinyl panel attaches to most batting nets or cage frames via 12 included ball bungees. Multiple attachment points keep the panel stretched and readable across sessions.

What Is It?

The TAP® Hitting Target is a large vinyl hitting banner designed to hang inside a batting cage and serve as a visual map of ball flight, with clearly printed boxes for different launch-angle tiers and left-center-right directions. When a ball leaves the bat and hits the banner, its impact location shows whether the swing produced a ground ball, a mid-belt line drive in the sweet-spot range, or a fly ball that would carry to the outfield.

Compared with a plain cage net — where balls disappear into the mesh and feedback is limited to feel — the TAP® Hitting Target turns each swing into a simple accuracy task tied to specific lanes and heights. Compared with small strike-zone or bulls-eye products meant for pitching or narrow hitting drills, it gives batters a full-field view of trajectory windows to train contact quality and ball flight, not just mid-cage aim.

  • Built for: Baseball and softball hitters wanting purposeful cage work; hitting coaches structuring tee and toss sessions around clear targets; programs tracking exit velocity; indoor facilities simulating on-field ball flight.
  • Best used: Tee work for mid-belt line drives, front-toss extra-base fly ball sessions, directional gap work, swing-with-purpose competitions, and radar-paired exit-velocity training.
  • Pairs with: TAP® Baseball Training Sock, Pocket Radar Ball Coach, TAP® K Target.

How It Works

Three mechanisms behind visual launch-angle training

Clarifying Launch-Angle Windows

Certain launch-angle ranges are more likely to produce line drives and extra-base fly balls than others. By separating the banner into ground-ball, mid-belt line-drive, and fly-ball tiers, athletes can see and practice the windows that translate to real hits instead of guessing from feel alone.

Linking Swing Path to Visible Outcomes

When a ball consistently hits below the mid-belt band, the barrel is driving the ball down. When it consistently strikes the top fly-ball tiers, the path may be lifting too steeply. That visual pattern lets hitters and coaches connect small path adjustments with clear, observable changes on the grid — no verbal cue required.

Combining Intent, Feedback, and Objective Data

Used alongside exit-velocity radar, the panel ties three signals into one rep: the hitter’s goal, the visible band and lane the ball hit, and the measured speed off the bat. Swings get evaluated on how hard and how well-directed contact was — not on force alone.

Backed by Research

The Science of Visual Feedback in Hitting Development

The TAP® Hitting Target has not been studied as a stand-alone device in controlled trials; its role is supported by broader work on launch angle, exit velocity, and visual-goal-based training, which shows that training with clear visual goals can sharpen barrel control and contact quality. Developed in collaboration with internationally recognized hitting coach Mike Ryan.

72″ x 72″
Full-field visual map of ball flight — large enough to show ground balls, line drives, and fly balls with left, center, and right directional lanes in a single banner
Every Swing
Instant visual feedback on ball flight without a camera — the impact location replaces guesswork and gives the brain accurate real-time information to self-correct barrel path
Speed + Direction
Pairs with radar to train both metrics in a single rep — athletes learn that hard contact only counts when it also travels into a productive launch-angle lane

TAP® Hitting Target — Visual Feedback Training for Launch Angle & Swing Efficiency

TAP® Hitting Target — Visual Feedback Training for Launch Angle & Swing Efficiency
Training for line drives -- tee-work demonstration targeting the mid-belt grids (L1, C1, R1) to reinforce clean, level trajectories.
Targeting extra-base fly balls -- shifting focus to the higher, flared zones designed for lifting the ball safely over the infield.
Swinging with purpose -- how the backdrop turns standard cage work into a focused target-practice session with a defined job on every swing.
Receiving instant feedback -- the ball strikes a specific visual quadrant, giving the hitter immediate information to self-correct barrel path.
Pocket Radar integration -- placing a Pocket Radar Ball Coach behind the target to capture real-time exit velocity alongside directional accuracy.
Developing proper launch angles -- how the geometry of the target zones builds consistency in launch metrics.

How to Use It

Tee work for mid-belt line drives: Align the middle tier grids (L1, C1, R1) with level line-drive-height swings. Adjust tee height and depth but keep the same goal — L1/C1/R1 — so the barrel learns to produce consistent, game-useful trajectories.

Tee and front toss for extra-base fly balls: Higher rows represent extra-base fly balls within productive launch-angle ranges. Alternate mid-belt and higher-band sets to teach hitters how to lift safely over infielders. (Front toss: coach or partner tossing underhand from short distance for live timing.)

Directional hitting and gap work: Assign L, C, and R columns to simulate pulling, going up the middle, or the opposite field. Combine row and column goals ("C1 then R1") to practice hitting to different parts of the field while maintaining quality trajectory.

Swing-with-purpose games: "First to five clean mid-belt line drives into L1/C1/R1" or "three extra-base fly balls in a row into the upper tiers." Track box counts so athletes see objective progress in directional accuracy and launch-angle consistency over time.

Exit-velocity sessions with radar: Position a radar unit per manufacturer guidance. Chase both a minimum speed standard and a specific band — hard, well-aimed contact, not just swinging hard.

Variant & Selection Guide
Variant SKU Weight Includes
TAP® Hitting Target HT 7 lb One 72″ x 72″ vinyl target and 12 ball bungees

Attaches to most batting nets and cage frames. Multi-cage programs often keep more than one banner so each tunnel runs structured work simultaneously.

Who This Is For
  • Commonly used for baseball and softball hitters who want more purposeful cage work focused on launch angle, direction, and contact quality instead of swing volume.
  • Commonly used for hitting coaches who structure tee and soft-toss sessions around clear targets and competitive games rather than open-ended sets.
  • Commonly used for programs that track exit velocity and want a simple way to connect radar readings with visible trajectory and spray patterns.
  • Commonly used for indoor facilities that need to simulate on-field ball flight in limited space.

We are not coaches.

What This Implement Does NOT Do
  • It does not replace full-field batting practice; it adds structure and feedback to cage work where ball flight is otherwise hard to judge.
  • It is not a pitching target and not designed to serve as a strike-zone or bullpen aid.
  • It does not automatically fix swing mechanics; it provides visual outcomes that coaches and athletes can use to guide adjustments.
  • It is not intended as the primary backstop for live pitching machines — should always be used in front of appropriate netting or cage walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TAP® Hitting Target and what does it do?

A 72″ x 72″ vinyl banner that divides ball flight into clear zones — hitters see whether each swing produced a ground ball, line drive, or fly ball and which lane it traveled into.

How does it help develop launch angle?

The height tiers correspond roughly to ground-ball, line-drive, and fly-ball windows. Hitters can see which band the ball struck on every rep and train sending it into productive launch-angle ranges instead of guessing from feel.

Can it be used with tee work only, or also with toss?

It works well with tee, soft-toss, and front toss. Any cage drill where the ball hits the backdrop benefits from the visual grid.

How does it work with a Pocket Radar or radar gun?

Set the radar unit up per manufacturer recommendations behind the hitter or target. Exit-velocity readings are captured while the grid shows where the ball traveled — combining speed and trajectory feedback in a single rep.

Is it appropriate for youth hitters?

Yes. Coaches can simplify goals to broad tiers — "hit the middle band" — and use the visual layout to teach basic line-drive and fly-ball concepts instead of relying entirely on feel. Works for all ages when goals are matched to experience.

How should it be mounted in the cage?

Attach securely to a net or frame with the 12 ball bungees so the panel hangs flat and zones are easy to read. Ensure enough clear distance from the hitter to safely absorb impact without interfering with the swing. Always mount in front of appropriate netting or cage walls.
