About This Product

A firm foam block for half-kneeling throwing, hitting, and core drills — take the legs out of the rep and put the focus on the trunk and arm.

The TAP® Kneeling Block is a dense foam block the athlete kneels on with the back knee. That half-kneeling position removes the stride and the lower-half drive from the drill, so there are fewer moving pieces to organize — the rep becomes about trunk rotation, arm action, and posture. Four heights let the athlete pick the block that levels their hips instead of making do with a folded towel or a stack of mats.

  • Half-kneeling constraint — Back knee on the block takes the legs out of the movement, narrowing the drill to trunk rotation, arm action, and posture.
  • Four heights, level hips — 4″, 6″, and 9″ heights across four block sizes; pick the one that levels the pelvis in half-kneeling for a consistent position every rep.
  • Firm, forgiving foam — Supports the down knee with more give than a hard floor, rep after rep.
  • Goes where training goes — Lightweight blocks toss in a gear bag for cages, bullpens, and sidelines.

What Is It?

The TAP® Kneeling Block is a solid foam block made for half-kneeling drill work. It comes in four sizes — 4″ x 6″ x 9″, 6″ x 6″ x 9″, 9″ x 6″ x 9″, and 9″ x 9″ x 9″ — so athletes from youth to adult can find the height that levels their hips. Coaches use it for half-kneeling throwing drills, half-kneeling hitting work, and core and posture drills where a stable, repeatable kneeling position matters. Unlike a folded towel or stacked mats, the height is the same every rep.

  • Built for: Baseball and softball pitchers, hitters, and coaches using half-kneeling drills for trunk rotation, arm action, and posture work; strength coaches adding kneeling core work.
  • Best used: Half-kneeling throwing drills (arm action, trunk rotation); half-kneeling hitting work; core and posture drills.
  • Pairs with: TAP® Training Sock, TAP® Connection Ball

How It Works

Three mechanisms behind half-kneeling block training

A Constraint, Not a Cue

Half-kneeling takes the stride and the legs out of the movement, leaving fewer pieces to organize — so attention can go to the trunk and the arm instead of the whole delivery at once.

Same Height, Every Rep

A fixed block height levels the hips the same way each set. No re-stacking mats, no guessing — the task stays constant while the athlete does the adapting.

Part-Practice by Design

The full delivery runs through the legs; the block deliberately leaves them out to isolate trunk and arm patterns. Any transfer gets judged on the mound, not on the block.

Backed by Research

Research Context: What the Evidence Actually Shows

No peer-reviewed study has tested the TAP® Kneeling Block itself. Its role is supported at the coaching-practice level — half-kneeling removes the legs from the movement so the athlete can organize trunk and arm work in a simpler task. This description does not claim that the product prevents injury, increases velocity or bat speed, corrects mechanics, restores tissue, or establishes competitive readiness.

Constraints-led coaching is a framework coaches use to design tasks like this one; it is a way of organizing training, not proof that a task produces an outcome. Equipment creates tasks, not verdicts: the block makes a half-kneeling position repeatable at a fixed height, and any transfer gets judged on the mound, not on the block.

Product Details

How to Use It

Pitching drills: Half-kneeling arm-action and trunk-rotation drills — short, high-quality sets with full attention on the trunk and arm. Keep the throwing easy enough that every rep stays clean.

Hitting work: Half-kneeling rotation drills without the stride — a simpler task for working on trunk rotation and sequencing.

Core and posture: Half-kneeling holds and controlled patterns for trunk stability work.

Light days: Be honest here — this is not a recovery tool. On true recovery days, most athletes are better served by rest and easy throwing.

Size Selection Guide

Kneel in a half-kneeling position without support, measure from the floor to your hip bones (iliac crest), and pick the block height that levels your hips.

Who This Is For

-Commonly used for baseball and softball pitchers and coaches running half-kneeling throwing drills for arm action and trunk rotation work.

-Commonly used for hitters and hitting coaches using half-kneeling work to simplify rotation patterns.

-Commonly used for strength coaches adding kneeling core and posture work to training sessions.

-Commonly used for youth athletes (13+) with the right-size block, conservative volume, and hands-on coaching.

What This Implement Does NOT Do

-It does not replace full-delivery throwing or hitting work — the legs drive the real movement, and half-kneeling leaves them out by design.

-It does not guarantee velocity, power, or mechanical changes; outcomes depend on the full program and the coaching around it.

-It does not prevent, diagnose, treat, or rehabilitate injuries.

-It is not a toy; it is a training implement for supervised use.

Safety & Youth Guardrails

Oates Specialties training tools are designed for athletes 13 and older. For adolescent athletes, training benefits from these implements are primarily neural — improvements in motor pattern quality, movement coordination, and athletic sequencing — rather than muscle size gains. All training should be conducted under qualified adult or coach supervision, with load and volume appropriate to the athlete’s current size, strength, and movement quality. Stop immediately if sharp or unusual discomfort occurs. We are not coaches. We do not provide coaching.

Not a toy: The TAP® Kneeling Block is a training implement for supervised use by athletes and coaches, not a play item.

Not a rehabilitation device: This product is not a rehabilitation device and should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment or physical therapy.

For youth and growth-window athletes: Start with the right-size block and simple patterns. Keep sets short with plenty of rest, and stop immediately if you see loss of control or changes in normal movement. Ensure a coach or qualified adult controls drill choice and progression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which size kneeling block should I get?

Kneel in a half-kneeling position without support, measure from the floor to your hip bones (iliac crest), and pick the block height that levels your hips. The 4″ x 6″ x 9″ block fits youth and smaller athletes; 6″ x 6″ x 9″ fits most high school and college athletes; 9″ x 6″ x 9″ fits taller athletes; and 9″ x 9″ x 9″ gives maximum stability for advanced drill work.

What is the block made of?

Firm, lightweight foam with a smooth surface. It supports the down knee with more give than a hard floor and is easy to carry to cages, bullpens, and sidelines.

Can I use it for rehab after an injury?

No. The TAP® Kneeling Block is not a rehabilitation device and is not a substitute for medical care or physical therapy. Work with a qualified professional for any injury or return-to-activity plan.

Will half-kneeling drills transfer to my full delivery?

Half-kneeling is part-practice by design — the legs are out of the rep. Use the block to work on trunk and arm patterns in a simpler task, keep full throwing in the week, and judge any transfer on the mound, not on the block.

Will it add velocity or fix my mechanics?

No tool does that by itself. The block gives you a repeatable task for trunk and arm work; outcomes depend on the full program and the coaching around it.

Can youth athletes use it?

Yes — athletes 13 and older, with the right-size block, conservative volume, and adult supervision. Stop for sharp or unusual discomfort.
