No plyo wall at the away field? Hang this on a chain-link fence and run your weighted-ball session anyway — ball skins intact, structure undamaged, routine unbroken.

The TAP® Portable Plyo Mat is a heavy-duty hanging backstop that turns almost any sturdy chain-link fence or field screen into a safer plyo wall — a dedicated impact surface (often a framed wooden wall with a plywood and rubber face, or concrete or masonry) that athletes drive weighted balls into during high-velocity training. Instead of forcing throws into bare wire, trees, or rough concrete and worrying about balls bursting, throwers can drive high-intent reps into a thick, energy-absorbing mat that protects the ball skin, the structure, and the training session.

  • Protective Plyo Wall When No Solid Wall Is Available — Built for the road problem: athletes forced to throw into fences, trees, or rough walls out of necessity. Hanging the mat over a sturdy chain-link fence creates a smooth impact surface that keeps soft-shell balls from being cut or split.
  • Industrial-Grade Material with Internal Stiffener — Repurposed industrial belting with a steel stiffener creates a thick, semi-rigid curtain that absorbs repeated high-velocity impacts without transmitting destructive force to the fence or the ball’s seams.
  • Kinetic-Energy “Curtain” That Absorbs Impact and Deadens Rebound — Hanging from the top, the mat flexes and swings on impact, absorbing and dispersing the ball’s energy rather than snapping it back — reducing unpredictable ricochets off rails or posts and supporting continuous, rhythmic sets.
  • 32″ x 32″ Design That Rolls and Packs in Any Equipment Bag — At ~8 lb, it rolls into a compact cylinder that fits in standard team equipment bags — ready for away games, travel tournaments, off-site bullpens, and any setting where a true plyo wall does not exist.
  • Snap-Hook Carabiners for Fast Fence Setup — Ships with snap hooks that clip to chain-link fences or compatible frames at the correct height. Pre-practice and pre-game setup is straightforward even when time is limited.
  • Supports Full-Intent Overload and Underload Throwing — Weighted-ball work combines lighter-than-game balls (underload) and heavier-than-game balls (overload) to challenge arm speed and force production. The mat removes the mental brake that comes from fearing damaged equipment — so throwers move through windup, release, and follow-through with true intent, where meaningful neuromuscular adaptation (changes in how the nervous system coordinates and recruits muscles) tends to occur. A soft-shell weighted ball is a training ball with a pliable outer cover that deforms slightly on impact, unlike hard leather or composite game balls.

What Is It?

The TAP® Portable Plyo Mat is a hanging, heavy-duty impact panel that serves as a portable plyo wall substitute for soft-shell weighted balls. It is a 32″ x 32″ panel built from thick, repurposed industrial belting with a steel stiffener so it can be hung flat from a chain-link fence or field screen and used as a primary hit zone for high-velocity throws.

Compared with throwing directly into chain-link or rough surfaces, the mat provides a smooth, forgiving face that reduces friction damage and seam cuts on weighted balls. Compared with fixed concrete, masonry, or built wooden plyo walls, it is lighter, quieter, easier on balls and structures, and travels with the team instead of being tied to one facility.

  • Built for: Pitchers and throwing athletes running structured weighted-ball programs who need a reliable impact surface on the road; travel teams at fields without permanent plyo walls; coaches protecting their soft-shell ball inventory.
  • Best used: High-velocity overload/underload weighted-ball progressions at away fields, travel tournament warm-ups, off-site bullpen sessions, and facilities that need a relocatable plyo wall between mounds and cages.
  • Pairs with: TAP® Max-Grip Weighted Balls, TAP® Connection Ball.

How It Works

Three mechanisms behind the portable plyo wall

Removing Equipment Anxiety for Full-Intent Throws

Without a reliable impact surface, throwers unconsciously hold back to protect ball skins and fence structures. The mat’s dedicated, durable target zone lets athletes drive through release with full effort — the condition where meaningful neuromuscular adaptation actually occurs.

Dissipating Kinetic Energy to Protect Ball Skins

The hanging mat flexes and swings on impact, spreading force over time and distance instead of concentrating it at a metal link or hard edge. This reduces seam cuts and skin failure in soft-shell weighted balls and limits shock transferred to the fence or screen behind it.

Preserving Rhythm and Coordination on the Road

Gaps in the weighted-ball sequence at away fields can disrupt the neuromuscular timing built through consistent high-effort throwing. The mat makes it easy to run the same plyo sequence on the road as at home — maintaining the movement patterns and coordination the nervous system has adapted to over time.

Backed by Research

The Science of Environmental Constraints in Throwing

The TAP® Portable Plyo Mat has not been studied as a stand-alone device in controlled trials; its role is supported by broader work on high-intent throwing, overload/underload training, and environmental constraints, which shows that appropriate external conditions can help athletes maintain effort and protect equipment.

32″ x 32″
Impact zone sized for high-velocity weighted-ball reps — large enough to absorb both accurate throws and misplaced deliveries without exposing fence or screen behind it
~8 lb
Heavy enough to hang steadily and absorb ball impact — light enough to roll, pack in a standard equipment bag, and carry to any field
Anywhere
Travel tournaments, away bullpens, off-site training — any heavy-gauge chain-link fence or sturdy field screen becomes a functional plyo wall in seconds

TAP® Portable Plyo Mat — Suspend from Most Fences, Fits in Equipment Bags

TAP® Portable Plyo Mat — Suspend from Most Fences, Fits in Equipment Bags
Introduction — travel-friendly development story and overview of the mat as a portable plyo wall for weighted-ball throwing on the road.
Origin story — observing an athlete forced to throw a weighted ball into a tree due to lack of a solid wall sparked the design concept.
Structural warning — how throwing pliable weighted balls directly into standard chain-link fences causes immediate seam cuts, skin failure, and burst balls.
Size specifications — the mat measures 32 inches wide and 32–36 inches long, constructed from heavy-duty industrial-grade belting.
Setup demonstration — mat suspended from a mobile field screen, showing a thrower driving high-velocity weighted-ball reps directly into the target area.
Rigging guidelines — suitable for heavy-gauge chain-link field fences; should not be hung on ultra-light residential fences that can warp under repeated impact.
Weight and transport — mat weighs approximately 8 lb; demonstration of how the side straps collapse inward for packing.
Roll-up procedure — demonstrating how to roll the mat tightly into a compact cylinder for storage in a standard equipment bag.

How to Use It

Set up: Clip to a heavy-gauge chain-link fence or solid field screen so the panel hangs flat at chest–shoulder height. Avoid ultra-light residential fences and any structure that visibly flexes under the mat’s weight or ball impact.

Run progressions: Primary impact surface for existing weighted-ball progressions as programmed by the coaching staff. Emphasize full, relaxed drive through release — the mat absorbs impact and protects ball skins from metal edges.

Maintain rhythm: Alternate lighter and heavier balls; catch the return off the mat or pick up from a controlled rebound area. More predictable than a bare fence, letting athletes stay in an athletic stance between reps.

Travel solution: Roll into an equipment bag for away games. On arrival, hang on a suitable fence, run the normal sequence, roll back up and stow — routine preserved, wall or no wall.

Who This Is For
  • Commonly used for pitchers and throwing athletes who run structured weighted-ball programs and need a reliable impact surface beyond their home facility.
  • Commonly used for travel teams and organizations that practice or warm up at fields without permanent plyo walls.
  • Commonly used for coaches who want to protect their soft-shell weighted balls and chain-link fences from damage while still encouraging high-intensity throwing.
  • Commonly used for facilities that want a movable plyo wall option that can be relocated between mounds, pens, and indoor cages as needed.

We are not coaches.

What This Implement Does NOT Do
  • It does not replace a full throwing-development program or professional oversight; it is a surface solution, not a training plan.
  • It is not a net and does not contain balls on its own — must be used in front of appropriate fencing or screens, not as a free-standing backstop.
  • It does not guarantee safety on inadequate structures; ultra-light residential fences or unstable frames can still warp or fail if used against recommendations.
  • It is not a general-purpose protective pad for vehicle impact, collision protection, or non-throwing applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Portable Plyo Mat do that a regular fence cannot?

The mat provides a thick, smooth, energy-absorbing surface that protects soft-shell weighted balls and reduces damage to chain-link fences — which bare wire or rough walls cannot do on their own. It deadens rebound and prevents the seam cuts and ball failures that happen when pliable weighted balls hit metal links directly.

How big and heavy is it?

32″ x 32″ and approximately 8 lb — heavy enough to hang steadily and absorb ball impact, light enough to roll and carry in standard equipment bags.

Can it be used on any fence?

Best suited for heavy-gauge chain-link field fences and sturdy screens. Ultra-light or decorative residential fences are not suitable because they can warp or be damaged under repeated high-velocity impact.

What type of balls is it designed for?

Specifically intended for soft-shell, pliable weighted balls such as TAP® Max-Grip Weighted Balls. Hard baseballs or softballs should be thrown into appropriate nets or fixed walls rather than the Plyo Mat.

How does the mat attach to the fence?

Ships with snap hooks (carabiners) that clip quickly to chain-link fences or compatible frames — making setup and teardown simple at practices and games.

Does it come with a screen or frame?

No. Screens and frames are not included. The mat is designed to hang on existing fences or field screens supplied by the facility or team.
