What is "Command" training?
Command is the ability to throw the pitch you want, where you want, at the speed you want — on demand. It is not the same thing as control. Control is throwing strikes. Command is choosing the strike, then hitting it. Every pitch that misses the hitter’s barrel by an inch is a pitch the hitter does not square up, and every pitch that lands in a specific quadrant of the zone is a pitch that changes the at‑bat in the pitcher’s favor.
How command actually gets better:
- Intent. Every training pitch has a purpose — a target, a location, an outcome — not just “throw one to the plate.”
- Feedback. The athlete has to know immediately whether the pitch did what was intended, and visual targets plus audible‑feedback pads are how that happens.
- Differential training. Slight, unpredictable changes in ball weight, size, or grip force the nervous system to adjust delivery — the underlying skill that command depends on.
- Repetition of the right thing. Precision is not built by simply throwing more; it is built by throwing more with a clearly defined target.
What’s in this collection
The TAP® Advanced Command Trainer is a freestanding strike‑zone target for high‑intent quadrant work. The TAP® K Target gives nine defined zones for differential command drills and effective‑velocity training. The TAP® Command Plate and the Six Pocket Target break the plate into specific zones a pitcher has to hit. The KHAOS® DTS Ball Set — 2019 ABCA Best of Show — is the differential‑training platform, with unpredictable ball weights inside similar‑looking baseballs that force the athlete to adjust every pitch.
Who trains this way
Pitchers who already throw strikes and now need to throw the right strike. Coaches who want a bullpen with structure, not just a catcher and a mound. Recruits who need to separate on tape. Anyone who has watched a heater catch too much of the plate and wants the tools to change where that pitch actually lands — and coaches or parents who want help building those command sessions can call or text our team at (936) 295‑4459 to talk through which tools fit their level and goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between control and command?
Control is the ability to throw strikes. Command is the ability to throw the pitch you want, where you want. A pitcher with control can find the zone. A pitcher with command can find the corner. Command is what separates strike-throwers from finishers.
How does the KHAOS® DTS Ball Set improve command?
The DTS Ball Set uses baseballs that look similar but have slightly different internal weights and external sizes. The nervous system can't pre-load its delivery for a specific weight, so it has to adjust every pitch. That process — reactive calibration — is what actually trains the mechanism behind command. It's the same reason the DTS Package won ABCA Best of Show in 2019.
Can these targets be used indoors?
Yes. The Advanced Command Trainer, K Target, and Command Plate are all designed for cage, bullpen, or indoor turf setups. Frame footprints and net dimensions are listed on each product page — pay attention to ceiling height and cage netting distance so the pitcher isn't shortened up.
What target should a young pitcher start with?
For athletes still building the strike zone, a full-plate target like the Target Pad® or the Precision Target gives large, forgiving feedback. Once strike percentage is consistent, move to a segmented target — the K Target or Six Pocket Target — that forces quadrant work. Call or text (936) 295-4459 and our team will help match the target to specific athlete needs.
